Southwest “System Glitch” Grounds 1,100+ Flights This Week

Southwest Airlines has cancelled 200 flights this morning, in addition to the 1,100+ already cancelled earlier this week. The cancellations are a result of a “system glitch” that has grounded flights all over the country, and displaced many crews, flight teams, and aircraft.

If your travel plans are affected by this glitch, you may find a little relief in Southwest’s remedy: Southwest is permitting most customers with reservations between Wednesday, July 20th and Tuesday, July 26th, to rebook their travel plans in the original class of service within 14 days, at the original ticketed price.

This trip of mine is a NO-GO today apparently…

Southwest has been experiencing high call volumes, but it is worth an attempt to give them a call and cross your fingers for a call back. I, myself, have been on hold for over 2 hours. dd4df978-7727-4a11-9d0e-04cba0fddfe6

Were your travel plans affected by this glitch?

  1. We have been cancelled twice this week because of this. The “compensation” better include car rental, hotel, and rebooking last minute on another flight … They have ruined plans, and cost us a ton of money to get where we needed to be. I do feel bad for the Southwest gate and phone agents. I am sure their week included a lot of post work bar time…

    1. I have never experienced a flight cancellation with Southwest but have had some missed connections due to delays and we were compensated fairly at the time. That said, with the large amount of travelers affected by the outage I am not sure how generous they can afford to be from a compensation standpoint. I would definitely advise escalating to a supervisor when (and if) you can reach a Southwest representative.

I agree with you on the Southwest agents… hopefully they aren’t getting TOO abused during this whole situation!

Good luck getting where you need to be!
